POLICE, ARMY INVADE IMO ASSEMBLY OVER IMPEACHMENT PLOT

Widespread speculation of an impeachment plot in the Imo State Assembly may have informed heavy security deployed in the assembly to counter subterranean moves which triggered tension among members. Apparently suspicion of a major action by House members at yesterday’s plenary may have informed the unduly heavy security presence in the Assembly complex yesterday with combat-ready mobile policemen and other security agencies spotted at strategic areas at the state parliament. There had been the fear that the five hitherto suspended members of the parliament were aligning with mostly Action Alliance (AA) members of the Assembly to upstage the Speaker, Chief Acho Ihim. However the suspected move against the Speaker was not made yesterday, instead the Assembly de-clared moves to recall suspended members of the Assembly.

The Speaker, Ihim (AA) directed that the suspended members of the House be invited to an interface with members of the House on 16th April, 2019 at their executive session. The Speaker issued the directive yesterday following a motion for the recall of the suspended members by the representative of Nkwerre state constituency, Engr. Chika Madumere (AGAP). Ihim noted that “far reaching decisions” had been taken concerning the suspended lawmakers and the decisions would be communicated to them. An Imo High Court had on 5th November, 2018 quashed the suspension of four of the five suspended members of the State House of Assembly, describing the suspension as unconstitutional.

The court also jointly awarded the applicants, Dr. Uche Oguwuike (Ikeduru APC), Chiji Collins (Isiala Mbano APC), Israel Nnataraonye (Mbaitoli) and Nkenna Nzeruo (Oru East APC) N8million in damages and N100,000 legal fees. Justice Goddy Anunihu in his ruling also directed the Speaker and the Imo House of Assembly, who were the first and second respondents to pay the applicants their salaries, allowances and emoluments for the period they were suspended. The fifth suspended lawmaker, Donatus Onuigwe (Oru West APC) did not join in the suit.
