Ever since the first private university in Nigeria was established in 1999, Nigeria has continued to witness birth of more of its kind year in year out. However, one ‘stains’ about private universities is its relatively ‘high tuition’.
While those within the middle and lower cadres often consider tuition from private universities as ‘outrageous’ and therefore prefer public universities instead, promoters of private universities, on the other hand argue that high tuition is relative, saying their charges are determined by quality education delivery to their students.
In this report, ADEGUNLE OLUGBAMILA dissects 10 private universities with somewhat highest tuitions in the outgoing year.
Fee: N2.7 million – N4.8 million per session
Established in 2009 Nile University located in Abuja, dwarfed its contemporaries this year with its mouthwatering tuition which ranges between N2.7 million-M4.8 million per session.
With three faculties at inception, Nile University has added three more faculties and a School of Postgraduate Studies.
2. Baze University, Abuja
Berthed in 2011 and also domiciled in Abuja, Baze University trails in the second position with N2m – N3.2million tuition per session.
3. Pan Atlantic University, Lagos
Initially christened Lagos Business School (LBS) when it was established in 1991. The university was later rechristened Pan-African University the following year. Its tuition is pegged around N2 million or slightly more depending on the programmes. The institution offers more programmes along business and social sciences.
4. American University Nigeria, Adamawa State
The university founded in 2003 strictly follows the American education system. Its tuition currently hovers between N1.9 – N2.7 per session
5. Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti
Afe Babalola University Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD) located in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, was founded in 2019 by philanthropist and legal luminary Aare Afe Babalola (SAN).
Afe Babalola University offers programs in six colleges: Sciences, Law, Engineering, Social and Management Sciences, Medicine and Health Sciences, as well as Post Graduate. Its tuition dangles between N1million – N2.2 million.
6. Benson Idahosa University, Benin City
Benson Idahosa University, Benin, Edo State is another institution which N1. million or slightly higher tuition depending on the course of study, does not appear that competitive.
The university opens its doors to her 400 first fruits in 2002, and across four faculties-Arts, Social Sciences, Education, and Basic and Applied Sciences.
7. Covenant University, Ogun State
Covenant University established by a prominent televangelist and of the richest clerics globally, Dr David Oyedepo charges between N1.2 million on the average. It began operation in October 2002.
8. Bowen University, Ogun State
Bowen is a faith-based university; specifically, a Baptist-oriented institution established in 2001. Its tuition swings between N450,000 – N1.3 million
The institution considered first Baptist University in the entire Africa, is located in Iwo, Osun State, Nigeria
9. Babcock University, Ogun State
Babcock University, another faith-based institution located in Ilishan Remo, Ogun State, is owed by the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Nigeria. It changes N700,000.00 though tuition ranges by programmes.
10. Lead City University, Ibadan
With 350,000 and above, one can secure an admission in this institution located at Toll Gate, Ibadan, Oyo State. Similarly, there are other programmes albeit with higher tuition in the university.
