A 25-year-old trader, Jibrin Usman, was on Monday arraigned before a Chief Magistrates’ Court in Kaduna for allegedly raping a 12-year-old girl.
The police charged Usman, who resides in Ungwan Fulani Sabon Gari, Zaria in Kaduna, with rape, NAN reports.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Sgt. Yilga Luka, told the court that the matter was reported at Sabon Gari Police Station by Hadiza Mukhtar of Ungwan Kanama Sabon Gari, Zaria in Kaduna before it was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department.
According to Luka, on Jan. 4 at about 10 a.m, a neighbour informed the complainant that her 12-year-old daughter was seen with the defendant in his friend’s room.
Luka added that during police investigation, the defendant voluntarily confessed to have committed the crime.
The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Section 258 of the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.
In his ruling, Magistrate Ibrahim Sidi ordered that the accused be remanded in prison custody pending legal advice from the Kaduna State Director of Public Prosecution (DPP)
Magistrate Sidi then adjourned the case until Feb. 20 for hearing.
